Tips For Game Improvement

  • Don't play a hand just to be a part of the game. If you don't have a good hand then it is probably best to fold.

  • A wise player will know when to continue playing and when to fold. He also knows that he is not perfect. When he makes a mistake he learns from it and moves on.

  • The thing that separates an experienced poker player from a casual poker player is that the experienced poker player expects to win. The casual poker player just hopes to get lucky.

  • Don't bluff just for the sake of it. Many beginners know that bluffing is a part of poker, but very few know how to use it. Bluffing only works in certain situations and against certain types of people.

  • It is better not to bluff at all then to bluff just for the sake of it.

  • Keep a keen eye on the other players, even if you don't have a hand.

  • If you are able to tell at what point a player bluffs, raises or folds, it may help you when playing against them.

  • Carefully examine your cards. A deck of cards only has two colors, red and black.

  • If you only have a quick look at your cards you may misread your hand and think that you have a flush and start betting hard when in actual fact you do not have a flush. This may seem like an insignificant point to mention, but people do make these mistakes and they LOSE MONEY.

  • Pick the right game for your skill level. Keep in mind that as the stakes rise, so does the skill level of your opponents.

  • If you are winning at a lower level game then that is only more motivation to keep playing there. There is no need to leave the table while you are winning.

  • Don't imitate other players. Many beginners that play poker don't really know what is going on and they try to imitate an opponent player. The reality is that many people that play poker are really bad at it, and imitating these players means copying their bad habits and bad moves. This will only cost you money.

  • If you want to improve your game the best thing you can do is practice.

  • If you don't want to lose any money then maybe invite some friends around for a social game. When you are more confident then you can start playing for money.

  • This is probably the single most important tip that anyone can ever give you:
Give yourself a set amount to play with/lose. If you are winning then walk away with your winnings or continue playing, but if you are losing then walk away once you have hit the limit that you set for yourself.
This can be a very difficult thing to do if you are in the moment and feel you need to win back the money that you lost. You need to have a clear mind here because you could end up losing more money.
