Rules of PokerThe Rules of poker are fairly simple. There are various versions of the game but we will only be discussing what I believe are the two most popular versions, mainly Texas Hold 'em and 5 Card Draw.
Here we will also show the different kinds of hands, from best to worst.

Texas Hold 'em
- Texas Hold 'em poker is played with a 52 card deck.
- The game commences with the dealer dealing each player two cards face down. Betting starts at this point.
- The dealer will then turn over three cards located in the middle of the table (this is unique to Texas Hold 'em).
- These cards in the middle of the table are for each player to use. At this point, betting will take place again.
- The dealer will turn over one more card, making a total of four community cards. Betting takes place again.
- The dealer will turn over the fifth and final community card. Betting will take place for the last time.
- When all community cards are showing, the remaining players will show their cards ordered by who bet first.
- The player with the best hand will win the round.
5 Card Draw
- Start by having all players placing their bets in a pot. This is generally a small bet to secure your spot in the game.
- The game starts with the dealer dealing 5 cards, face down, starting with the player on his left.
- Each player picks up their cards to see what kind of hand they have.
- Betting starts again with the player to the left of the dealer. A player may opt out of the game at this point if they do not have a hand.
- The players who are left in the game get a chance to trade in either a single, double, or tripple card from their hand in exchange for new ones.
- In the event that you have an Ace, you are entitled to trade in other cards in your hand; but normally you have to show your Ace.
- It is not compulsory to trade your cards. If you hace a good hand you can retain the cards that were first dealt to you.
- Once each player has their new cards, a second round of betting begins, commencing from the left side of the dealer.
- After betting is over, all players must display their hands. The player with the best hand is the winner of the pot.
Types of HandsThe following is a list of 5-card poker hands, from the absolute best to worst. This list assumes no jokers or wild cards are being used.
1. Royal Straight Flush
A royal straight flush is when you have 10-J-Q-K-A, all of the same suit.
2. Straight Flush
Five cards, of the same suit, in order, such as 4-5-6-7-8 all of hearts.
3. Four of a Kind
Four of the same card, such as 8-8-8-8-5.
4. Full House
A set of three of a kind plus a pair, such as 10-10-10-3-3 or K-K-K-2-2.
5. Flush
Five cards all of the same suit, but not in order, such as 2-4-7-J-K of spades.
6. Straight
Five cards in a row, such as 3-4-5-6-7, but not all of the same suit.
7. Three of a Kind
Three cards of the same number or rank, such as 6-6-6. If you had Q-Q-Q-2-3, you'd have three of a kind.
8. Two Pair
Two pairs of cards of the same number or rank, such as 5-5-4-4. If you have a pair of sevens and a pair of nines, you've got two pair.
9. One Pair
Two cards that match, like K-K.
10. High Card
If no one has any of the above hands, the player with the highest card in their hand wins. Just having an ace in the hole is sometimes enough.
