What is Poker?

Poker is probably one of the most well known and most played card games in the world.

These variations of poker all go by different names. some of the more popular ones are:

  • Texas Hold 'em

  • Five card Draw

  • Seven Card Stud

  • Omaha

The History of Poker

The history of poker is a matter of some debate. Poker history has many versions, but no one can say for certain which is fact and which is fiction.
It is very likely that Poker derived its present incarnation and name from components of many different games.
Possibly the most popular historical belief is that the Chinese invented this game close to the year 900 A.D, and possibly derived Poker from the Chinese dominoes. Other historians believe that Poker came from a game in Persia known as "as nas", which is a 5-player game, which requires a specialized deck of cards (25 of them), with 5 suits. This origin dates back to the 17th century.

It has been said that the name 'Poker' descended from the French poque, which in turn descended from the German pochen ('to knock'), but it is not entirely clear whether or not the games named by those terms were the real origins of poker. The origins tell us that it closely resembles the Persian game of nas, and was taught to French settlers in New Orleans by Persian sailors. It was also commonly regarded as sharing ancestry with the Renaissance game of primero and the French brelan.

In the modern world, Jonathan H. Green made one of the earliest written references to Poker in the year 1834. In his writing, Green describes rules that allude to a "cheating game," which at that time, was being played on Mississippi riverboats. Green recognized that his was the first reference to such a game, and since it was not referenced in the current American Hoyle, he took it upon himself to call the game Poker.
Green's game of Poker was played with 20 cards, using only the A's, K's, Q's, J's and 10's. 2 to 4 people could play, and each was dealt 5 cards. After Green wrote about it, Poker evolved into the number 1 cheating game on Mississippi riverboats.

How is Poker Played?

In most poker games, the first round begins with some kind of forced bet to secure the players position in the game. The player to the left must either match or raise the previous players bet or fold. The betting round ends when all players have either matched the last bet or folded. If all but one player fold on any round, the remaining player wins the pot regardless of his hand. If more than one player remains after the final betting round, the players show their hands and the winning hand takes the pot.
